The Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call for action to eradicate poverty and inequality, protect the environment, and ensure the prosperity of the world’s population. In total, 17 areas have been identified, the implementation of which can lead to the development of the main areas of the economy and social life. The monitoring of the achievement of the SDGs is under constant control of representatives of the United Nations and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The Sustainable Development Goals ensure a balance between the three components of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. The economic component includes tasks aimed at sustainable economic growth, job creation, provision of high-quality infrastructure and development of innovations (SDG 7, 8, 9, 10, 11). The social component is aimed at eliminating poverty and hunger, ensuring equality, access to education and healthcare (SDG 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). The environmental component covers measures to provide clean drinking water, protect the environment, conserve biodiversity, and combat climate change (SDG 6, 12, 13, 14, 15).
Universities not only create and transmit knowledge but also occupy a unique place in society. The University’s sustainability policy focuses on creating and maintaining an educational environment that is environmentally-oriented, socially just, and economically stable. The main aspect of the University’s SDG implementation strategy is the introduction of the principles of sustainable development into the educational process, scientific research and daily activities of the university. We are called upon to build a university that works closely with the environment, adheres to environmental standards and actively participates in solving social and environmental challenges. As part of this policy, the university strives to improve its energy efficiency, minimize its carbon footprint, reduce waste, and improve resource recycling.
