The history of the department and the field of education

The military department was established by the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan №1249 dated august 12, 2000 at the M. Utemisov West Kazakhstan state university.

The military department was established by the decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan №551 dated may 17, 2004 at the Zhangir Khan West Kazakhstan agrarian and technical university.

At various times the department was headed by: colonel Konirov Askar, colonel Dosmukhambetov Ruslan, colonel Mukhametkaliev Bakytzhan, from december 2023 to the present, the head of the department is colonel Dosmukhambetov Ruslan.

In the year of the department’s creation 700 students were accepted in the specialty «Combat use of combined arms units, units and formations».

Since 2012, the department began to train specialists for the Navy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and since 2016 it has started training specialists for the Ground Forces again.

A great contribution was made to the creation of the military department by veteran teachers Kekk V.O, Nuzhdenko P.N, Zhevtyak V.T, Chernyshov Y.L, Laptev M.I, Shablyko N.I, UVP and ITP – Akkereev N.I, Utepkaliev A.M, Tazhgulov G.Z.

Currently, the department employs highly qualified teachers with practical experience in the military and in educational institutions.

Currently, the department has received a new development. New specialties have been opened, the number of students undergoing military training is increasing every year, and the educational and material base is being improved.

The military department has: a parade ground, a tactical field, a fire and engineering camp, a sports town, an electronic interactive shooting range, military equipment, equipped classrooms, military equipment, a library.

Since 2001, 3314 reserve lieutenants and 959 reserve sergeants have been trained. Of these, more than 100 people have served in the ranks of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan in officer positions, 80 people continue military service, over 220 people serve in various positions as officers of other troops and military formations. Some of them continue to serve in military units, mainly in units of the RGC «West» and the ministry of internal affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The direction of training

The Military department carries out its activities in accordance with the «Rules of military training for reserve officers and reserve sergeants», approved by the Minister of defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan on July 24, 2020.

The Military Department trains reserve officers in the following specialties:

  • Combat employment of combined-arms units, subunits, and formations;
  • Combat employment of missile troops and artillery units, subunits, and formations;
  • Combat employment of mortar units;
  • Combat employment of ground artillery units, subunits, and formations;
  • Combat employment of engineer-sapper (engineering) units, subunits, and formations;
  • Communication organization in the Ground forces;
  • Planning and organization of territorial defense;
  • Operation and maintenance of motor vehicles;
  • Veterinary and sanitary expertise.

Since September 2021, he has been training reserve sergeants in the following specialities:

  • Riflemen (Squad Leader);
  • Motor vehicles (Operation of automotive equipment);
  • Medium-power shortwave radio stations;

Military training of students is an additional type of education and consists of theoretical and practical training courses, a training camp for young students or professional practice for female students. The girls are trained according to the reserve officer training program, specializing in «Organization of communications in the Ground Forces». Military training under the reserve officers program is carried out on a free and paid basis, under the reserve sergeants program on a paid basis.

Terms of training:

  • reserve officers – 2 years;
  • reserve sergeants – 1 year.

In accordance with the “Rules of military training for reserve officers and reserve sergeants”, the military Department of the ZKATU named after. Zhangir Khan is recruiting students (boys and girls) for training in the programs of reserve officers and sergeants of the reserve. Students under the age of 24 are allowed to participate in the competition for the year of the competition.

• Study at the military Department:

– according to the reserve officer training program, training is conducted for 2 years and 5 months; 

– for students of ZKATU – free of charge;

– for students of other universities – on a fee basis;

– for reserve sergeants, training is conducted for 1 year and 5 months – on a fee basis.

Applications are accepted from February 2 to September 30, 2026:

• for training in the reserve officer training program, documents are accepted from students (boys and girls)

• first year (with 3 years of study),

• first and second year students (with 4-year studies),

• first, second, and third year students (with 5 years of study);

• for training under the reserve sergeants training program, documents are accepted from students

• first year (with 2 years of study),

• first and second year students (with 3 years of study)

• first, second, and third year students (with 4 years of study),

• first, second, and third year students (with 5 years of study).

– must be submitted through the e-government web portal – www.egov.kz
