Objects of research, development or design: Siliceous rocks – opoka of Western Kazakhstan and mineralized underground waters for purification and desalination by filtration

The purpose of the project / program: is the development of a technology for watering pasture lands by desalinating mineralized groundwater through filtration in modular bulk filter units using modified natural non-carbon sorbents based on siliceous rock – opoka from the West Kazakhstan deposit – as filter components.

Project / Program Tasks

– laboratory studies on the development of various compositions and process parameters for obtaining modified non-carbon sorbents based on siliceous rock – opoka of Western Kazakhstan for purification and desalination of mineralized groundwater by filtration, zoning of the region’s territory by the degree of waterlogging and the presence of groundwater with varying degrees of mineralization (task I);

– development of an experimental sample of a Modular installation in the form of a bulk filter with filtering components based on modified siliceous rock – opoka for desalination of mineralized groundwater, its installation, assembly and adjustment at a transhumance site for pasture irrigation (task II);

– scientific justification for the use of a Modular installation in the form of a bulk filter with filtering components based on modified siliceous rock – opoka for desalination of mineralized groundwater for pasture irrigation in the dry steppe zone of Western Kazakhstan (task III).

Achieved Results and Novelty

Various compositions of sorbents based on siliceous rock – opoka of Western Kazakhstan have been developed for purification and desalination of mineralized groundwater. The developed compositions are distinguished by high specific surface area (the total surface area of the sorbent samples is 0.04856 m2 / g) and porosity. The developed sorbents mainly contain mesopores (from 2 to 50 nm), and the largest number of pores have a size of less than 10 nm. High purification and desalination of water is based on the presence of labyrinthine mesopores, which ensures high filtration efficiency and promotes maximum absorption of dissolved mineral salts by the surface of siliceous rock grains – opoka and modifying components.

Expected Results

1) 3 (three) articles will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science database or having a CiteScore percentile in the Scopus database of at least 35 (thirty-five), as well as at least 3 (three) articles in a peer-reviewed foreign or domestic publication recommended by the KOKSNVO.

2) presentations at conferences, reports at seminars and meetings at various levels;

3) searches for the patentability of scientific results will be conducted in the domestic patent office and an application for a patent for a utility model will be filed.

4) During the implementation of the project, it is expected to obtain a scientific effect consisting in the creation of a modular installation in the form of a bulk filter for the purification and desalination of mineralized groundwater for irrigation of pastures of distant-pasture livestock in low-water areas.

The socio-economic effect of the expected results is to provide low-water areas of distant-pasture livestock farming with the technology of irrigation based on desalination of mineralized underground waters on a modular installation in the form of a bulk filter.

5) The research results can be applied by various consumers, including design organizations, agricultural production management structures, akimats, agricultural production entities engaged in distant-pasture livestock farming. The developed technological solutions can be commercialized.

6) The target consumers of scientific results are individuals and legal entities engaged in livestock farming.

7) The work contains certain risks, since it has been practically not studied and is not scientifically substantiated. Therefore, with the expected result, the planned work can affect the development of science and technology.

8) Dissemination of the results of the work among interested parties through publications, press appearances, television and radio broadcasts, conferences and public defenses.

Degree of implementation: Work on the project began in 2023 and is at the initial stage of implementation. The results of the developments will be implemented in the conditions of peasant farms engaged in livestock farming and in need of purification and desalination of underground mineralized waters.
