Technology commercialization

The Technology Commercialization Office was established at the University by the Rector’s order No. 156 § 5 of July 22, 2011. Currently, the main functions of the office are performed by a leading specialist in technology commercialization, associate professor, Ph. D. in Economics Ayesheva Gulshat Amangeldievna.

Main functions:

  • analysis of RSTA (the result of scientific and technical activity) in order to select the most promising RSTA ready for commercialization;
  • maintaining a database of RSTA containing ready-to-commercialize RSTA and requiring completion of RSTA;
  • conducting the commercialization of IPO (intellectual property objects), including licensed trade;
  • definition of the authors ‘ responsibilities for the commercialization of the IPO;
  • control over the fulfillment of obligations under license agreements by both the university and the licensee;
  • together with an intellectual property specialist, preparation of proposals on measures to prevent violations of exclusive rights to the IPO;
  • development of negotiating positions, and representation of the interests of the university on issues related to the use of property rights to the university’s IPO or with the participation of the university in the authorized capital of other legal entities in accordance with the established procedure;
  • preparation of initiatives aimed at involving university employees in conducting research activities related to the development of new commercial products and ensuring the demand for RSTA;
  • preparation of proposals for cooperation with third-party entities in order to conduct innovative activities and increase the efficiency of the commercialization of the IPO;
  • advising applicants and potential partners on the conditions, forms and mechanisms for providing financing;
  • providing consulting assistance in the preparation of applications for participation in various competitions for grant funding for the justification of the concept and commercialization of projects;
  • management of other issues related to the commercialization of the IPO;
  • conducting advertising campaigns to highlight the patented RSTA.

Main results:

In order to commercialize and promote technologies/products of the university, their presentations are held at various international and national competitions, forums and exhibitions, competitive selection and internship in the United States under the special SABIT business internship program on intellectual law and technology commercialization, agreements on cooperation and joint promotion of technologies are concluded, technological audits are conducted, business requests are determined, business plans are drawn up and marketing research is conducted, etc.:

  1. More than 70 employees of the University (project developers) and OCT have been trained in 80 courses, trainings, seminars on technology commercialization.
  2. More than 200 projects were under development for commercialization.
  3. Participated in more than 30 competitions of the National Agency for Technological Development, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Center for Engineering and Technology Transfer (QazInnovations), etc.for commercialization, 18 exhibitions and 20 scientific and practical conferences, 4 international and national commercialization reactors. Including in the competition for commercialization (justification of the project concept, creation of an industrial prototype); technological business incubation; in national and international technology commercialization reactors (prizes) in Riga, Kathmandu, Almaty, Uralsk; “The best project for business angels” within the framework of the AEF Innovation Congress; in International competitions of innovative projects “TECNOPRIZE” (American CRDF Global Foundation), “I DARE” (CRDF Global, GIST initiative) in Abu Dhabi (UAE), “Y Combinator”, “Convexity Labs”; in the annual Republican competitions of innovative business plans NIF$50K-2012; in KazINNO mechanic, Atameken startup and BIO.KazINNO; in the International Exhibition-presentation of the latest technologies of Russia and Central Asian countries in China, full technical proposals for 5 projects have been developed for participation in the competition of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (CCT LLP) for the justification of the concept. Three projects won a grant for the commercialization of technologies from the World Bank and JSC “Science Foundation” of the SC MES RK, INNOTEKHPROEKT LLP was created.
  4. More than 30 agreements, contracts, memoranda for implementation and cooperation have been concluded, including 6 international ones (China, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Russia).
  5. An inventory of the University’s projects was carried out, a register of promising projects of the University was compiled and approved. As a result of the technological audit (under an agreement with the Center for Technology Commercialization), profiles of technological proposals for 10 innovative projects with commercial potential were compiled.
  6. More than 25 seminars were held for project developers on the methodology of technology commercialization, on the conditions, forms and mechanisms for providing state support for innovation activities.
  7. A marketing study of the regional innovation system of the West Kazakhstan and Aktobe regions was conducted (a survey of over 250 respondents, an analysis of the current state, problems of innovation development and technology commercialization, as well as identification of the most effective ways to improve them, etc.).
  8. The projects that were under development by the commercialization office took part in more than 50 Competitions for the provision of grants for the commercialization of technologies. 4 grants of JSC NATD(“National Agency for Technological Development”), 1 grant of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Technology Commercialization Program), 2 grants of JSC “Science Foundation”, 2 grants of the PO “Taiburyl”, 2 grants of CRDF Global, 2 grants for BR (Business Roadmap) -2025, etc. were received (including 2 grants in 2020).
  9. Over 250 consultations were provided to project developers in the framework of participation in commercialization competitions, exhibitions, organization of meetings with potential consumers, etc.
  10. Expertise of 9 innovative projects (expertise in the field of commercialization, under an agreement with the Center for Technology Commercialization of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan).
  11. Creation and organization of the student scientific society. Conducting classes on the commercialization of technologies. Consultation and expertise within the framework of the IBS (International Business School) and SSS (Student Scientific Society) more than 100 innovative business projects, etc..
  12. Preparation of a tender application for 22 projects for grant financing for the commercialization of technologies of JSC “Science Foundation” and the Center for Engineering and Technology Transfer (6 of them in 2021).
  13. Participation in the project of commercialization of technologies of the World Bank and JSC “Science Foundation” of the SC (Science Committee) MES RK (“Production and sale of young mutton and semitone wool by using the genetic potential of crossbred sheep of Western Kazakhstan”, grant 50000000 tenge). A marketing research of the market was conducted, a business plan for the project was drawn up. For the entire period of the project implementation (2017-2020), the project products were sold in the amount of more than 90 million tenge and taxes Value added tax (VAT) were paid more than 7 million tenge.
